VLC media player is a cross platform media player and streaming server from VideoLan. VLC supports various streaming protocols but RTMP protocol was not supported by VLC Media Player.
Recently i saw a post on VideoLan forum talking about possibilities of adding support for RTMP streaming and Red5 in VLC media player. The post was very interesting and I thought of sharing this information with everyone here. VLC Media Player is working on implementing RTMP support. They have already implemented RTMP as input source and this will enable one to-
Stream RTMP from Flash Player 9.0.124 to VLC
Receive RTMP stream and Transcode to multiple RTSP stream outs.
There was also a discussion over the possibility of supporting Red5 in VLC.
will VLC get the possibility to connect against running rtmp servers like Red5? Scenario: Take a stream, transcode to H.263 / VP6, act as rtmp client and connect/broadcast to a server via rtmp://myflashserver:1234/streamname ?Now when RTMP input is implemented by VLC Media Player, they started working on RTMP output and Real time streaming h.264 RTSP to RTMP in VLC.
